This course examines the history of towns, cities, and suburbs in American history from the Colonial era to the present. The readings examine the historical evolution of urban areas in the United States. We will examine how forces including immigration, economic growth, and technology shaped American cities, and how those cities interacted with the natural environments surrounding them. In addition, we will consider how cities have served as crucibles for American society, politics, and culture.
